University of Minnesota College of Education & Human Development
Licensure and Leadership Development - Dedicated to the Preparation of Educational Administrators
Field Experience

The field experience is one of the most important program components to implement the professional wisdom and authentic practice aspects of its vision.  It is also a specifically stated requirement of MR3512.  The University of Minnesota’s requirement to meet the rule for a field experience is made up of a three-credit course and a document that guides the projects and learning process associated with the field experience.  Embedded in that is utilization of the professional wisdom of the candidate’s mentors and reflective practice.  Though it is not required in rule to include some hours at all levels for principal preparation, the University requires candidates for the K-12 principal’s license to complete 2/3 of the required 320 hours at the level of preference such as elementary school and in this case the remaining 1/3 hours is divided 40 hours each between the middle and high school levels.  Superintendent candidates are required to complete a minimum of 320 hours, directors of special education 200 hours and directors of community education 200 hours as required in rule.  These requirements are described for current and prospective students on the web site under program requirements.
